Uttar Pradesh: Sugarcane farmers demand hike in sugarcane price

Shamli, Uttar Pradesh: Sugarcane farmers under the banner of Kisan Union have reiterated their demand for hike in the sugarcane purchase price to Rs 450 per quintal. The Kisan Union had convened a meeting of cane farmers at Kurmali village during which the demand was made.

Savit Malik, national president of the Union, said, “The power department cuts power if farmers fail to clear power bills. But sugarcane farmers are yet to receive pending cane dues. Electricity, diesel, fertilizer etc. have all become expensive. The production cost of the crop has gone up considerably. In such a situation, there should be a price of at least Rs 450 per quintal. At the same time, the government should also take effective steps to fulfill the promise of sugarcane payment within 14 days.”
