Sugarcane farmers demand reopening of Alanganallur sugar mill

Sugarcane farmers are demanding the government reopen the National Cooperative Sugar Mill located at P. Mettupatti near Alanganallur, reports The Hindu.

N Palanisamy, state president, of Tamil Nadu Sugarcane Farmers Association said, “Around 2000 acres of land under sugarcane cultivation from Alanganallur, East Madurai, Melur, Tirumangalam, Aruppukottai and Sholavandhan have been registered with the sugar mill.”

Farmers have stated that they are facing financial losses as the procurement price at the mill was Rs 2,950 per tonne while the private owners and middlemen are quoting lower price.

Farmers under the leadership of CPI (M) leader Kumar took out a rally demanding the reopening of the sugar mill.
