Sugarcane farmers launch agitation for their demands

Moradabad: Ahead of starting the crushing season, sugarcane farmers have gathered in huge numbers outside the deputy sugarcane commissioner office in and have launched an agitation. The farmers say that they will not call off agitation until their demands are accepted.

Harpal Singh Chaudhary, president of the Bhartiya Kisan Union Asli, said, “Government is failing to implement the provisions under sugarcane control act regarding recovery of pending arrears from mills. The government officers have become tools of the millers to exploit farmers. We will not stop until the government accepts our demands.”

Allahabad High Court had set October 15 deadline to clear cane dues, but mills in the state failed to abide it. UP Chief Minister CM Yogi Adityanath had served another date of October 31 for mills to clear the cane arrears, but millers failed to pay the bills.
