Punjab: Sugarcane farmers stage protest to demand sugar mill to be made operational at earliest

Sangrur: Sugarcane growers, rallied under the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), orchestrated a protest today at the Chief Minister’s camp office in Dhuri, pressing the state government and Bhagwanpura Sugar Mill management to expedite the unit’s operationalization, reported Tribune India.

Joining the demonstration were activists from the Kirti Kisan Union, BKU (Dakonda), BKU (Rajewal), Punjab Kisan Sabha, and BKU (Kadian).

Jarnail Singh Jahangir, district chief of Kirti Kisan Union, underscored their opposition to the AAP candidate in the Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency, citing the government’s alleged apathy towards resolving the issue. Jahangir mentioned that a delegation of farm leaders had already met with the Dhuri SDM to press for action regarding the sugar mill’s operational status.

As per media report, district administration is actively engaging with the owner of Bhagwanpura Sugar Mill.

Addressing the matter, Major Singh Punnawal of Punjab Kisan Sabha stated that they had met with the OSD to the Chief Minister, who had requested seven days to engage with the mill owner. However, despite the passage of two months, there has been no response from the mill’s side, Punnawal lamented.

Furthermore, Punnawal highlighted that while the mill management had settled all payments owed to farmers, the state government has yet to disburse Rs 1.03 crore owed to them.
