Sugarcane farmers switch to traditional crop variety

Idukki: Sugarcane farmers in Marayur region are shifting to traditional crop varieties of CO 413, which were used on a low scale in the sugarcane fields in the last many years.

Jagadeeswaran, sugarcane farmer from Koodayayal who has cultivated two acres of land using this variety of crop said that this crop variety is high yielding and has capacity to adapt to the change in climate and soil condition. The variety sustains even if there is a scarcity of water and is disease resistant, he said.

Marayur Agriculture Produce Company (Mapco) chef Selvin Mariappan said, around 20 farmers have started cultivating this variety of sugarcane crop following Mr. Jagadeeswaran. This variety needs more time to grow but is more adaptable to natural calamities like water shortage, he said.

N. Priya, Marayur Agriculture Officer said that the traditional varieties of crops should be preserved and she said that she was aware of the old variety now being cultivated by a few farmers.
