Sugarcane harvesters to go on strike from February 28

Surat: As the sugarcane crushing season is nearing the end, the sugarcane harvesters from South Gujarat have planned to launch an agitation from February 28 for their various demands including the hike in wages. They have come under the banner of Majoor Adhikar Manch and have planned to go on indefinite strike.

Sudhir Katiyar, an advisor to Majoor Adhikar Manch said, “There are more than 2 lakh cane harvesters, most of them tribals work in South Gujarat where 15 sugar mills are located. Manch has been organizing the sugarcane harvesting workers. They are being exploited through low wages.”

Jayesh Gamit, trade union leader, said, “They get only Rs 250 per day. It takes 12 to 14 hours to cut one-tonne cane for two workers. Their demand is to hike the wages to Rs 400 per day.”

Sugarcane harvesters from Dang district of South Gujarat claim they are getting less daily wages and are staging agitating to increase it.
