Tamil Nadu: Farmers stage protest demanding higher sugarcane price

Tiruchi: Members of various farmers’ associations, operating under the umbrella of Aikiya Vivasayigal Sangam (Samyukt Kisan Morcha – SKM), conducted a demonstration in front of the Collector’s office in the city on Monday, reported The Hindu.

The protest was spearheaded by P. Ayyakannu, the State president, and P.R. Pandian, the convenor of SKM in Tamil Nadu. The organisations, among its several demands, called for an increase in the procurement price of paddy to ₹3,500 per quintal and sugarcane to ₹4,000 per tonne. Furthermore, they advocated for the implementation of a distinct crop insurance scheme tailored for Tamil Nadu, an allotment of ₹25,000 per acre as input compensation for farmers affected by disasters, a cultivation incentive of ₹10,000 for farmers, and the release of water from the Cauvery until the end of February to cater to the needs of samba/thalami cultivation in delta districts.
