Tamil Nadu sugarcane farmers yet to receive Centre’s share of minimum support price

Tirupur: Number of farmers from Tirupur district that have sent their sugarcane to Amaravathi cooperative sugar mill last season are yet to receive the centre’s minimum support price for the sugarcane.

According to the reports, 1.28 lakh tonnes of sugarcane grown in Tirupur, Dindigul and Erode districts were crushed at the sugar mill at Krishna Nagar in Madathukulam in last season.

A Bala Thandapani, district joint secretary of The Tamil Nadu Vivasaigal Sangam, affiliate to AIKS said, ” The minimum support price for sugarcane was fixed at Rs 2750 per tonne and the state government has paid its share of Rs 2612.50, the centre is yet to disburse its share of Rs 137.50 to some farmers”.

“The farmers from Tirupur district have sent 75,000 tonnes of sugarcane to the mill for crushing then. The Centre had so far transferred the bills of around 50,000 tonnes of sugarcane crushed till July last year but is yet to disburse the remaining amount. The government should ensure that the farmers get their dues on time,” he further added.
