Tamil Nadu: Farmers urge state government to fix sugarcane price at Rs 4,000 per tonne

Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu: Demanding pending cane dues, sugarcane farmers under the banner of the Sugarcane Growers Association protested outside the Arignar Anna Sugar Mills, Kurungulam on Thursday.

According to the news report published in Thehindu.com, the farmers have stated that the mill is yet to pay them dues around Rs 18 crore against the cane they supplied for the 2020-21 crushing season.

P. Ramasamy, president of the organisation who was leading the protest said that the state government should fix sugarcane prices at Rs 4,000 per tonne as per the promise made by DMK during the election manifesto. The farmers demanded that an announcement in this regard should be made in the forthcoming Budget.

Farmers have also demanded the government to take steps to increase the groundwater table in the sugar mill area.
