Thailand to support sugarcane farmers with financial aid

Bangkok, Thailand: Thailand government is planning to provide financial support to as many as 2,00,000 sugarcane cultivators with financial aid worth 10.2 billion baht as their financial situations have worsened due to the coronavirus pandemic and droughts. It will aid in sugarcane cultivation for the next season.

The industry ministry has prepared the proposal which will be tabled before the cabinet this Tuesday for approval.

According to the news report published in Bangkok Post, Ekapat Wangsuwan, secretary-general of the ministry’s Office of Cane and Sugar Board (OCSB), Industry ministry said, “If the cabinet approves the advance payment, the ministry will ask the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives to pay sugar cane farmers.”

According to the government, the financial aid would help farmers to recover their financial condition as they are already struggling with low prices for their sugarcane.
