There is an urgent need to make Uttar Pradesh’s sick sugar mills “smart”: VM Singh

Pilbhit: Farmers organisations have criticised the UP government for ignoring the agricultural sector in the budget presented by finance minister Suresh Khanna on Tuesday.

V M Singh, national convenor of All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC) said, “The government has completely neglected the farmers when there was need of restructuring sick sugar mills. Dozens of sugar mills of the Uttar Pradesh Sugar Mill Federation and Corporation are on the verge of closing due to decrepit plant and machinery. Farmers are worried about their future in case if these mills stop working. There was an urgent need to make the state’s sick sugar mills “smart”, instead of earmarking Rs 20,000 crore for the Smart City project.”

“Despite Allahabad high court orders, the UP’s sugar mills have failed to clear cane dues. but the government did not feel any need to create a reserve fund to safeguard interests of over 40 lakh farmers in the state,” he further added.
