Ukraine produces 2,35,000 tonnes of sugar so far this season

25 sugar refineries that are operational in Ukraine have produced 2,35,100 tonnes of sugar since starting of the season from August 30. According to the reports, 25 out of 32 refineries were operational as of October 2. As per market estimates, the wholesale prices of sugar in the sugar season 2019-20 may grow by 18 per cent to UAH 13,000 (US $530) due to reduction in the country’s sugar output.

National Association of Sugar Producers of Ukraine (NASU) had earlier stated that the heavy rains have resulted in poor yield of the sugar beet and sugar production likely to reduce to 1.1 million tonnes. During the 2018-19 season, Ukraine’s sugar production decreased by 15 per cent to 1.7 million tonnes.

Earlier, it was reported that the harvest and quality of sugar beets in Ukraine would be lower than expected because of extra moisture of upper layers of soil and high air humidity caused by heavy rains, which ultimately affects the sugar output. The country had also witnessed a decline in sugar export in the 2018-19 season.
