Uttar Pradesh: In last 38 months, sugar mills paid Rs 98,382 crore to sugarcane farmers, says Minister

Lucknow: Sugarcane arrears have always remained a major issue in Uttar Pradesh’s politics. Parties don’t leave any stone unturned on this issue as sugarcane farmers votest play an important role in the state.

Former state chief minister and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav launched an attack on the ruling government over sugarcane dues. In a tweet, Yadav said, “The sugarcane farmers are suffering due to non-payment of their dues by the sugar mills. Mills are also mounting pressure on the sugarcane farmers to harvest the entire cane crop within a week.”

Replying to the Yadav’s allegation, sugarcane minister Suresh Rana said that during the 38-month tenure of the Yogi Adityanath government, the sugar mills had cleared Rs 98,382 crore of the sugarcane farmers.

In a tweet, Rana said, ” In a 38-month tenure of the Yogi Adityanath government, the sugar mills had cleared Rs 98,382 crore of the sugarcane farmers. This amount is higher than the total payment made to the sugarcane farmers during the five-year tenure of the previous Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party government. So far in the current crushing season, sugar mills paid Rs 19,328 crore to the farmers.”

Despite lockdown, the sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh are still operating keeping in mind the welfare of the cane farmers.
