We are dependent on Indian market for many essential commodities including sugar: Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister

Bangladesh has made a formal request to India to export 50,000 tons of onions and 100,000 tons of sugar ahead of Ramadan, reported Dhaka Tribune.

Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud stated this on Monday, stating that he put forth the request during his recent visit to New Delhi. During the visit, Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal assured to export 20,000 tons of onions and 10,000 tons of sugar.

The meeting between the two ministers took place on February 9.

“We are dependent on the Indian market for many essential commodities, particularly onions, sugar, lentils and spices,” Hasan was quoted as saying on Monday.

“I urged them to allocate an export quota to us so that we can import these items from them at fair prices and as per our requirements.”

Furthermore, the foreign minister mentioned extending an invitation to Indian President Droupadi Murmu to visit Bangladesh at her convenience.

“She graciously accepted the invitation, and we will be sending the formal invitation shortly.”
