Western UP sugarcane farmers prefer banana cultivation

Meerut, Uttar Pradesh: After cultivating sugarcane for years, the cane cultivators in western Uttar Pradesh are slowly shifting to the banana-growing as it is giving them more profits.

According to the media reports, the area under banana cultivation has slowly but steadily making inroads into the sugar belt. From around 250 hectares last year, patches of banana plantation are dotting about 466 hectares this year.

A farmer from a village in Hapur said, “The banana cultivation gives good returns as compare to cane cultivation and it is almost disease-free that reduces our losses.”

The banana cultivation is peaking up in over 12 districts in Western UP including Ghaziabad, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Bulandshahr and Baghpat.
