The Zimbabwe government is planning to lease the Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe on a 99-year lease to improve the sugarcane growing business. This is one of the steps taken by President Mnangagwa’s administration to promote investment in the sugar sector to help the economy grow. This will also benefit sugarcane farmers to improve their financial condition.
Tongaat, one of the largest companies generates employment for more than 20,000 people in the country.
According to the media report, The company owns cane plantations at Mwenezana Estates in Mwenezi stretching over 400 hectares and cane fields at Hippo Valley and Triangle in Chiredzi spread over 25,000 hectares. Ezra Chadzamira, Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affair said that the government is working on the leasing process.
