Farmers to protest against government’s delay in announcing SAP for sugarcane

Chandigarh, Haryana: Sugarcane farmers’ unions in Haryana will be launching agitation against the state government next week over the delay in fixing the state-approved price (SAP) for sugarcane for the 2022-23 crushing season, reports Hindustan Times.

Bhartiya Kisan Union (Charuni) will be staging a protest on December 12 at all the sugar mills in the state while BKU (Tikait) Haryana will demonstrate on December 15 and they will be organizing a meeting at Bilaspur in Yamunanagar district on December 11 over the issue. They are demanding the government hike the SAP for the cane to Rs 400 per quintal.

Gurnam Singh Charuni, president of BKU (Charuni) said, “The Punjab government has already fixed the SAP to Rs 380 per quintal but the Haryana government has not yet fixed SAP is ironical. We will launch an agitation on December 12 for this demand.”

The government is working under the pressure of sugar millers and so it is delaying fixing the SAP, said BKU (Tikait) Haryana president Ratan Mann.
