If swarm of locusts venture towards western UP, they may damage sugarcane crops: Minister

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has announced financial aid of Rs 5 lakh to each bordering districts of the state for spraying chemicals to kill the insects. The government has also formed a monitoring committee to look after the issue and tackle it promptly.

Agricultural Minister Surya Pratap Shahi said, “The funds have been disbursed to the districts to purchase chemicals to spray on the locusts and kill them. Apart from this a monitoring committee headed by the chief development officer will be set up to monitor the spread of the locusts and tackle them.”

The minister claimed that if the swarm of locusts venture towards western UP, they may damage the sugarcane crops.

The desert locust is a species of locust, a swarming short-horned grasshopper. They are known to devour everything in their path, posing an unprecedented threat to the food supply and livelihoods of millions of people.
