Nepal: Mills start clearing cane dues after arrest of the sugar mill owner

Butwal, Nepal: After the arrest of the Lumbini Sugar Mills proprietor, the sugar mill has assured that the mill will clear the pending cane dues to the farmers. The mill administration has stated of clearing the dues by mid-January. The proprietor of the mill Manoj Agrawal was arrested on Thursday from Parsa and was brought to Nawalparasi on the same night. He was later released after the mill administration agreed to pay the dues as per the agreement of the farmers with the government.

Farmers that had not received cane dues from the last two years had lodged a complaint against the miller.

According to the media report, a discussion was held between sugarcane farmers, police and administration at the District Administration Office, Nawalparasi on Friday to resolve the matter. Farmers have warned that they will not allow the mill to operate until they are paid. Chief District Officer of Nawalparasi Sagar Mani Pathak said that Agrawal had asked for a week to get the loan approved.
