PSMA asks millers to sell sugar at subsidized rate

Bahawalpur: Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) Punjab Zone Chairman Zaka Ashraf Chaudhry said that the sugar mills in the province should sell sugar at the subsidized rate of Rs 95 per kg to the consumers, reports Dawn.

The decision was taken in a meeting convened by him with federal food security minister Tariq Bashir Cheema and Punjab food secretary Muhammad Zaman Wattoo on Saturday, as per the PSMA press release.
As per the meeting, it was agreed to sell sugar at a subsidized rate of Rs 95 per kg at the designated sales points in the market.

The decision was taken on the backdrop of increasing sugar prices in the domestic market and following the government’s suspicion that the dealers may hoard the sweetener to manipulate sugar prices.

The minister has asked the deputy commissioners in Punjab to set up sales points in their respective districts to facilitate sugar sales at Rs 95 per kg.

All the PSMA members would share the data of sugar sales with the government through the dashboard that will help in keeping a check on the smuggling of the commodity, he said.
