Sugarcane farmers threaten to organise Mahapanchayat if cane payment delayed

Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh: The Sugarcane farmers under the banner of Rashtriya Kisan Mazdoor Sanghatan have decided to organise mahapanchayat at district collectorate on March 4 if the payment of their arrears is delayed.
Kailash Lamba, Sanghatan’s secretary of West UP said, “The millers are yet to pay crores of rupees to the farmers. Mills are not even speaking about clearing dues. Now the Holi festival is approaching and the administration should clear 100 per cent dues of the cane farmers.”

Sanghatan’s district unit head Vinod Kumar said, “Government is not taking action against the mills that have not paid farmers’ dues but the notices are being issued to farmers for not paying power bills and loans. How can farmer pay these bills when he will get his cane dues after one year of production. The government should ensure that the farmers get their bills by March 4 else we will organise mahapanchayat at collectorate office.”
