Uganda: Sugarcane farmers plan to set up sugar mill

Kamuli, Uganda: Sugarcane growers based in Busoga region has appealed Ms Rebecca Kadaga, the Speaker of Parliament to assist them in setting up sugar mills. They alleged that sugar mills exploit them, therefore they want to set up a sugar mill for their region.

The farmers met the Speaker during the launch of sugarcane cottage processing and value addition at Kitayunjwa Sub-country of Kamuli District on Sunday. Sugarcane farmers cried foul that the drafters of the Sugarcane Bill entrenched the slave mentality.

Allan Tacca, one of the petitioner said, “As the Sugarcane Bill was sponsored by millers, we are condemned to slavery as sugarcane casual labourers.”
