Government fixes 23 LMT monthly sugar quota for domestic sale in January 2024

In a notification issued on December 29, the food ministry has allocated 23 lakh tonnes (LMT) monthly sugar quota for January 2024 to 566 mills which is 1 LMT higher than the quantity allocated in January 2023 (22 LMT).

In the last month i.e. in December 2023 the allocated sugar quota for domestic sale was 24 LMT.

According to market experts, the market, which was witnessing sluggish prices, has now stabilized, and the price is expected to remain steady with the announcement of a 23 LMT quota. With this announcement, we can anticipate fluctuations in the domestic market within the range of plus or minus 20 to 30 Rs per quintal.

As per notification, “Opening stock as on 01.01.2024 Plus (+) Production during the month of January, 2024 till 31.01.2024 minus (-) quantity not exceeding the figures as mentioned in notification against respective sugar mill.”

The sugar-mill wise Maximum quantity of white/refined sugar for domestic sale and dispatch during the month of December, 2023 as given in column (4) of the table, has been worked out on the basis of stock position as on 30th November, 2023 reported by the concerned sugar mills in P-II form on NSWS portal.

“All Sugar mills are informed that all sugar mills have to register and fill online P-II on National Single Window System (NSWS) portal (https://www.nsws.gov.in). If the sugar mill does not fill online information on NSWS portal for the month of December, 2023 by 10″ January, 2024, domestic quota for February, 2024 will not be released to the mills. All the sugar mills/distilleries are informed that information relating to ethanol production from B-Heavy, Sugar Syrup, Sugarcane Juice shall also be filled on NSWS portal in the P-II form itself,” the notification further reads.

All the sugar mills are hereby directed that the compliance of mandatory packaging of 20% of sugar in jute bags and fill information thereof in P-lIl proforma on NSWS portal, failing which domestic quota for February, 2024 will not be released to the mills.

Any violation of this order would attract the penal provisions under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, as amended from time to time.
