Kenya: Smuggled sugar seized at store

Kenya Revenue Authority officials visited a store located in Lodar, Turkana county and seized smuggled sugar worth Sh40 m stored in it. The sugar is believed to be procured from Uganda.

According to the news report published in the-star.co.ke, the officials during their routine surveillance detained a truck while unloading about 500 bags of smuggled ‘Mayunge’ sugar at the store. The investigation later revealed that the smuggler has allegedly stored 800 bags of sugar in three stores and has political connections. The store, according to authority, belongs to Christopher Doye, Turkana North MP.

The sugar is believed to be owned by 15 traders connected in Lodwar town.
